Bits of my weekend (& last week)
It feels like my life is spent doing DIY now. This weekend we took a break from doing work on the house. How did we spend it? Fixing our broken shower, adding in a dimmer switch to the living room and starting an upcycling project. Apparently since we started working all weekend every weekend, it’s much harder to take a break. When you know how many things need to be done, it’s hard to...

Welcome 2012!
Despite the recession and seemingly endless bad news on a wider, country-wide and global scale, last year was one of the best years of my life. This is a bit of a smugfest, so apologies for that. But it’s been a good year. I’ve had some years which have been pretty crappy so I feel doubly appreciative of everything I was blessed with in 2011. Some of the best bits: - moving in...

I must say, this has been a very slow, but rather stonkingly good week.

Woooooooooooooooooooooooooo
a) Felt all inspired today after a workshop/training session out of the office b) It’s the weekend c) I had some BRILLIANT news today. Don’t want to jinx it, but next Friday I should be exchanging on a soon-to-be-beautiful flat in London d) It’s Thanksgiving on Thursday and for the first year EVER my parents are in London e) There is going to be a LOT of pie this Thursday. Bits of my weekend
I know that Thursday is not technically the weekend, but it felt like it to me. P and I went to Mama Lans in Brixton Village for some VERY delicious dumplings. Including a bottle of wine purchased from Sainsburys, we ate ourselves silly for £24. What a deal! On Friday, I met up with ex-colleagues/amazing friends. We had a great Chinese with exceptionally slow service at Manchurian Legends in...

After a cold walk in east London and a chilly bonfire night in Battersea Park, it feels as though winter is finally upon us.

I can’t believe it was just under a year ago that P and I went to Bath. It was such a great long weekend. So much has changed over the past year, it’s amazing and a little terrifying but mostly just really exciting. I haven’t been taking too many photos lately but I have been looking back at last year’s photos. It was such a cold, wintry holiday. In some ways it’s...

Tea and scones at the Balham Bowls Club with Hannah after the Vintage Event (blogged about by Hannah here). I bought some old magazines, just out of curiosity, really. I think they may form part of a project soon, but so far I’m not sure what. I really enjoyed reading some of the articles and especially loved reading all the adverts! Mmmm… Pie… I made my first...

Bits of my weekend
So much gorgeous weather. I know it won’t last but this hot sun has been fantastic, and it has made me more accepting of the cold weather that is to come. We had a brilliant time getting ready for Peter’s birthday party - cruising the second hand shops on Clapham High Street for bargainous finds (including this AMAZING dress which I loved, but sadly had to change out of half...

Bits of my weekend
Ah, a long weekend in the Alps this weekend. Some friends I went to the France/Switzerland border to carry things into storage at one of my friends’ mum’s house. But that was just the excuse. The real reason was to eat cheese, drink wine, and make puppets.  Wine, cheese, meat. Yes. A nighttime barbecue ended in us using candles to determine whether the chicken was cooked (could...

Bits of my weekend
Another lovely weekend spent in the capital. The plant that my cousin gave me for my birthday back in January is coming back into bloom, just as our tomato plant is coming to an end. We haven’t had a huge amount of tomatoes from it this year, but those we have eaten have been sweet and delicious. Saturday was GOERGOUS. I went to the Buy My Wardrobe Event (for new blog Shoestring...

Bits of my (long) weekend
This weekend I headed up to Newcastle with Peter to visit his sister. She took us to Tynemouth, all around Newcastle, to the wonderful Baltic restaurant, and then drove us up to Northumberland, where Peter and I were camping. We went to an amazing market where I spent all my pocket money… We sampled the delights of Newcastle city centre… We took my favourite ever photo of the...

Bits from my weekend
It looks as though we may have to leave the flat we only just moved into. Our landlady has decided to sell up and thought she would give us very early notice (even though officially, she can’t ‘evict’ us until late October). Very sad, but it does throw up the question about buying a place. Should we? I feel kind of on top of my finances again, which is nice. Buying a flat will...

Cornwall
I’ve never been to Cornwall before, but it is stunningly beautiful. The water is such a clear, turquoise colour! So pretty. I knew it was going to be pretty because even the train ride (which takes you along the south coast of the country) was nice - we saw whole herds of deer and the sea and boats and beautiful cliffs and flowers - it got better with every mile. If you haven’t been...

Woah
On Thursday Peter and I got engaged! I have told the story too many times now, so am not going to write it all down right now (maybe another time), but needless to say it was very romantic. He got down on one knee, and of course, I said yes! Very exciting times, but there is quite a lot to organise with a wedding, isn’t there? Might need to take a few weeks to not think about that side too...

Ah, summer
What a gorgeous weekend. The weather was perfect - hot, but dry. I spent a lot of time in Clapham Common this weekend, going for a long walk on Sunday morning and then enjoying some cava with Peter there on Sunday evening. It’s a good people watching spot. There was a lot of topless men action. Things I am looking forward to this summer: Latitude Cornwall Newcastle Hadrian’s...

Bits of my weekend
Semi stressful weekend with Peter’s parents staying with us and our parents meeting each other for the first time, but it felt like it all went well in the end. We did do ENDLESS amounts of cooking, which was brilliant, but also involved a lot of washing up. Last night we had Thai take away and threw away all the dishes it came in. Very wasteful, but felt necessary. Beautiful flowers from...

Caitlin Moran's feminist handbook →
petitefeministe: Laurie Penny on Caitlin Moran’s How To Be a Woman: Being a feminist this summer is pretty exciting. It’s like we’ve all been at some dull charity drinks reception and someone has hit the lights, jacked some power ballads into the speaker system and said: ladies – let’s get messy. First, there were the SlutWalks, when all at once, as if from nowhere, brave, angry women all...

History
Tonight I went through three boxes of things that I had left in New York, which my parents have now brought over to the UK. God, what a treasure trove, I wish I had weeks to read through it all. Sadly I don’t right now, so it has all gone in the attic, but things in the boxes included: My favourite dresses when I was 12 My flower girl dress at my aunt’s ill-fated wedding My school...

Toulouse
I have come back from Toulouse only having gained one pound in reality, but still feeling about ten pounds heavier. We ate so much cheese. We drank so much wine. We walked really very little, as the city centre is quite small. It was a lovely holiday, and thankfully the weather mostly played along, although it was rainy in parts and cloudy a lot of the time. At least it was warm, the food was...

Staines aiiiiight
Louise, I went to Staines! Ok, I only went there to walk out of it, but it didn’t seem so bad… it had a nice pelican (?) statue and some chavvy pubs… Peter and I went for a long walk (9 miles) on Sunday, from Staines to Windsor all along the river. It was so beautiful! Staines Um, yes, I’ll take this house, please. And the boat. Many thanks. On second thought,...

On my mind
My technology is shit. My broadband seems to only work in fits and starts. I had the router replaced, which then broke, so as a ‘what the hell’ solution, I plugged the old, apparently broken one in, and now it seems to work just fine. If only the same thing would happen to my laptop, whose screen has gone so dark you have to hold it at a 210’ angle just to see what’s on...

Holiday + Miscellaneous Bits
It’s been a long time, but here’s what I’ve been doing over the past few weeks. My colleague and friend, Victoria, ran the London Marathon. Including gift aid, she raised almost £5,000. She had never run before she started, and she now loves it so much she is thinking of running the Dublin Marathon in September. Amazing. Peter and I finally moved in together properly. After...

Bits of my weekend
My parents were here, which was lovely, but somehow I managed not to take any photographs of them. I did, however, take photos of these things: Ikea is basically the Ryanair of furniture, aren’t they? Extra costs for delivery and extra costs to put it together I get, but extra costs to take the thing upstairs and extra costs to drill the thing to the wall once it’s together, I...

Bits of my weekend
Peter and I celebrated our first anniversary with a long walk in Hampstead Heath and an amazing dinner at Nopi, the new Ottolenghi restaurant. God the food was good. Every single mouthful was delicious, and the prosecco was pretty damn tasty too. I will definitely be going back.

Miscellaneous bits
As I haven’t posted in ages, here are some miscellaneous bits from the last couple of weeks: Parakeet in Brockwell Park I have tried so many times in my life to bake bread and every single time the bread has turned out heavy and inedible. Well, today I baked amazing, delicious, crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside bread, thanks to this book which I took from...
